New Year, New Resolutions, New Hopes, Newish-oldish Fears

Its that time of the year when we all make new year’s resolutions. For me, my resolutions, goals, dreams and aspirations seem too ambitious. So ambitious that I fear I might never attain them. Instead of shrinking down these dreams as each new year roles around, I seem to have dreams and set goals even higher than those set in the preceding year.

Each year I strive to reach my goals. Some years I exceed my expectations and some years I do not. So my question is “Does this make me a dreamer?”

In 2013, one of my resolutions was to get into a research intense university for my PhD (ex. Columbia, Duke, Emory). A resolution that carries on into the next year (2014). Now I find myself in 2014 and even though my applications are in and out of my control, I find myself in fits of panic that I have made a resolution that I may or may not attain.

Now PhD applications are ridiculously stressful. With the stress level ever so high, it’s a wonder that anyone would want to go through the process. Each day I wonder to myself “why o why didn’t I just go the engineering route in college?” (I digress)

So why are resolutions important? Why do we automatically think about them with the start of each year?
